Events @ Outwrite! Upcoming Event!Hollis Gillespie Title of Event: Hollis Gillespie Brings More Funny Tales and Observations to Outwrite August 21
When: Thursday, August 21, 2008 7:30 PM Location: Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse Description: Outwrite Bookstore & Coffeehouse hosts columnist and commentator Hollis Gillespie, reading from her latest collection of humorous observations, Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility (Globe Pequot) on Thursday, August 21, 2008, at 7:30 p.m.
Atlanta-based author Hollis Gillespie used to be ashamed about having a hard-drinking, trailer-salesman dad and a missile-making mom with broken dreams of being a beautician. If anyone asked about her family, she would tell them her parents were wealthy and that she came from a refined background. She never mentioned the time they lived in a mobile home two miles north of the Tijuana border. That was then. This is now.
Trailer Trashed is a hilarious and heartbreaking collection of essays on one broad theme - Hollis’s relationships with her offbeat sisters, her precocious daughter, her bizarre friends, and the people they love. Brimming with irreverent, side-splitting observations on life that will wow fans of Augusten Burroughs and Sarah Vowell, Trailer Trashed follows an offbeat single mom through the raucous journey of her life, from hauling a safe to Nicaragua for her sister to selling a television series in Los Angeles for herself. Think David Sedaris meets “Thelma & Louise.”
Tim Dorsey, author of “Atomic Lobster” says, “If you enjoy your humor twisted like a molly bolt, Gillespie is your gal. One of the few writers who require stretching warm-ups to avoid pulling something in a laughing seizure.” “Can a book be bust-out hilarious and also break your heart?” writes author Jacquelyn Mitchard (“The Deep End of the Ocean” and “The Midnight Twins”). “Hollis Gillespie's roller coaster memoir, Trailer Trashed, does just that. In it, she manages to remember not only herself, but each of us, as well.”
Gillespie is a syndicated humor columnist and the author of two memoirs, Bleachy-Haired Honky Bitch and Confessions of a Recovering Slut. She has been a Writer’s Digest “Breakout Author of the Year” and a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She is also a television writer, NPR commentator, keynote speaker, and writing instructor. She lives in Atlanta, writing out of a trailer in her backyard.

The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy
by
Leleux, Robert
"In the Dear John letter Daddy left for Mother and me, on a Saturday afternoon in early June 1996, on the inlaid Florentine table in the front entry of our house, which we found that night upon returning from a day spent in the creme-colored light of Neiman's, Daddy wrote that he was leaving us because Mother was crazy, and because she'd driven me crazy in a way that perfectly suited her own insanity." In a memoir studded with delicious lines and unforgettable set pieces, Robert Leleux describes his East Texas boyhood and coming of age under the tutelage of his eccentric, bewigged, flamboyant, and knowing mother.
Left high and dry by Daddy and living on their in-laws' horse ranch in a white-pillared house they can't afford, Robert and Mother find themselves chronically low on cash. Soon they are forced into more modest quarters, and as a teenaged Robert watches with hilarity and horror, Mother begins a desperate regimen of makeovers, extreme plastic surgeries, and finally hairpiece epoxies---all calculated to secure a new, wealthy husband. Mother's strategy takes her, with Robert in tow, from the glamorous environs of the Neiman Marcus beauty salon to questionable surgery offices and finally to a storefront clinic on the wrong side of Houston. Meanwhile, Robert begins his own journey away from Mother and through the local theater's world of miscast hopefuls and thwarted ambitions---and into a romance that surprises absolutely no one but himself. Written with a warmth and a wicked sense of fun that lighten even the most awful circumstances, "The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy" is a sparkling debut. |
